How Essential Oils Touch Every Layer of Self And How That Changes Everything
Let’s make something clear: healing isn’t linear. It’s layered. It’s vibrational. And, it is deeply personal.
After 20 years in the wellness space devoted to walking a path of personal healing, and 10 years of daily practice with the essential oils of plants, I have learned that when used with intention, they have the ability to touch every layer of Self.
They are not just surface level nice-to-have products or pleasant scents. They are powerful plant allies - tools for remembering, restoring, and realigning with who we are.
My former life as a cartographer and geospatial analyst is still alive in me- I now map the human terrain. That lens of precision, pattern-recognition, and layered systems guides how I see each client: as a unique, multidimensional map, and how I support them in navigating the five distinct and interconnected layers of self.

These layers mirror the five stages I often see in the healing journey… especially when essential oils are the navigation system guiding the process.
Oils work multidimensionally, meaning they meet you wherever you are, and gently invite the next layer to open. The plants all have their own chemistry and spirit, that literally leave imprints on our cells, and thus our consciousness.
Let’s explore what this looks like in real life:
Essential Oils & Five Stages of Healing
Healing the Physical Body (The Physical Layer)
When your body is dysregulated, inflamed, or running on empty, it becomes incredibly difficult to access clarity, creativity, or peace. That’s why we begin here - at the root. The ground level.
According to peer‑reviewed research, between 60‑80% of primary care visits may involve a stress‑related component.¹
What the body can’t process emotionally, it often holds physically — and that’s where essential oils become such powerful allies. Tension, pain, sleep issues, hormone disruption, fatigue, digestive issues, it’s all part of the body trying to speak.
Essential oils support the healthy function of the physical body at the cellular level, soothing inflammation, calming the nervous system, improving sleep, regulating digestion, and supporting the immune response. They help restore physiological harmony, so your system feels safe enough to begin releasing what it’s been holding.
Oils like Lavender, Frankincense, Deep Blue, Tea Tree, and OnGuard help clear static, reduce toxic load, and bring you back into connection with your body’s own natural intelligence.

Healing the Heart (The Energy/Emotional Layer)
Once the body feels more grounded and nourished, something profound happens: the emotional body begins to stir. You access the most powerful energy center in your body. The heart.
This is the place where many people feel the first real shift - because for the first time in a long time, the body isn’t just surviving. It’s safe enough to feel again.
Unprocessed emotions…grief, anger, betrayal, abandonment, disappointment… don’t just disappear. They go underground. They lodge in the tissues. They become part of the subtle architecture of how we breathe, react, protect, and relate. The subconscious backlog.
The heart becomes a vault for what couldn’t be processed in the moment, and protective layers of armor are layered upon these places in the body as protective mechanisms.
Essential oils meet this layer not with force, but with deep, vibrational permission.
They meet you where you are and say: It’s safe to feel now.
They help us reconnect to emotions we didn’t know were still running the show.
Oils like Geranium, Rose, Console, Bergamot, Lavender, and Frankincense bring the nervous system into a softer, more receptive state. Applied to the heart center or inhaled gently, they can support emotional release and metabolizing denser emotional energies.
You may feel unexpected waves of sadness. You might cry without knowing why. You might finally feel anger that was long overdue. Memories may pop back in. Often mistaken as regression, it is actually progression.
It’s your emotional body clearing the backlog, now that you finally have the energy and capacity to hold it. Oils help move emotional energy with grace.
They help you be with what’s rising instead of resisting it, so it can complete rather than stay stuck. In this stage, you begin to soften into your own humanity.
You stop shaming your sensitivity. You start feeling with curiosity instead of fear.
You feel the transmutation of what was once heavy into luminous teachings.
💡 One truth I have learned from direct, lived experience:
Pain + resistance = suffering.
But pain, when felt and released, = freedom.
It is worth repeating. Oils help dissolve the resistance, so the pain can move through rather than stay trapped within. This is the heart of emotional wellness.
➡️ You begin to trust yourself to feel. You stop fearing your emotions. And you remember:
You don’t have to carry what was never meant to be yours. Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional. Healing is always possible when you decide staying in the same loops of suffering is no longer an option.
Releasing Limiting Beliefs (Mental Layer)
If the emotional body is the realm of feeling, the mental body is the realm of meaning—the layer where stories are formed, identities are shaped, and inner dialogue takes root.
We’ve all absorbed beliefs like:
“I’m too much.”
“It’s not safe to be seen.”
“I have to earn my worth.”
“Good things don’t last.”
And while it’s true that a belief is just a thought we continue to think, that thought is rarely just mental.
Most beliefs are rehearsed patterns that have been:
Emotionally charged
Nervous-system reinforced
Stored in the tissues of the body
Repeated over and over until they feel like truth
That’s why simply “thinking positively” rarely works. We think the same thoughts we thought yesterday and unless we are bringing consciousness to the unconscious we operate on autopilot.
The thoughts are important yes, but to truly shift a belief, we have to get underneath it—into the emotional imprint, the energetic field, and the physiology that’s been organized around it.
This is where essential oils can be deeply supportive.
Oils don’t just influence your mood - they impact your state. And when your state shifts, your mind becomes more spacious, your body becomes more receptive, and new thoughts have a place to land.
Oils like Peppermint, Clary Sage, Lemon, Basil, and Rosemary help clear mental fog, enhance awareness, and disrupt thought loops that no longer serve.
Let’s say someone carries the belief: “I always have to work twice as hard to prove myself.”
They could try to overwrite it with affirmations like:
“I am enough. I deserve ease.”
But unless the nervous system feels safe, the emotional body is resourced, and the mind is quiet enough to listen, that affirmation just bounces off the surface.
Instead, when you…

Speak that truth aloud from a grounded, clear place
That’s when something real begins to shift.

You begin to understand that:
💡 Thoughts are signals—and words carry frequency. How you talk to yourself matters.
💡 Your body hears everything you think. Your cells are listening.
💡 Beliefs are rehearsed patterns - and you can choose new ones when your system is ready to receive them.
This isn’t about forcing better thinking. It’s about creating the inner conditions where truth can land and lead. Essential oils help change those conditions - clearing mental clutter, calming emotional noise, and creating enough internal spaciousness for real belief shift to occur.
Expanding Spiritual Awareness (Intuition Layer)
Spirit is not something outside of you. It’s not a cloud in the sky, a separate being, or something to be earned. Spirit is your essence. The eternal part of you that existed before the body, and will continue after it.
You are not a body trying to be spiritual. You are spirit, having a temporary, miraculous, embodied experience.
Intuition is how spirit speaks through the body. If spirit is your essence, then intuition is your signal. It’s the pulse of your soul. It’s the inner compass that leads you - not through logic, but through resonance.
You might not hear a voice.
You might not see a sign.
But you feel it. A pull. A yes. A knowing.
Even if you can’t explain it, your body feels the shift.
And that’s the moment your spiritual awareness comes online:The intuition body is how your soul speaks through your system.It’s your internal GPS, your guidance, your built-in truth barometer. But in a noisy world—internally and externally—interference can cloud the signal. Stress, overthinking, conditioning, and shame all fog the channel.
Essential oils help clear that interference.
They regulate the nervous system, open the energetic field, and soften the edges of doubt so you can recognize when spirit is speaking through you… as you.
One of my favorite oils for this layer is Neroli. There’s something incredibly sweet and pure about it, like an angelic thread that connects heaven and earth.
Neroli helps dissolve shame and invite softness. It lifts the veil just enough so you can feel your own sacredness again.
I also love:
Frankincense – for sacred presence and deep listening
Black Spruce – for rooting into divine wisdom with stability
Jasmine – for trust, surrender, and reunion of your masculine & feminine energies within
These oils don’t give you answers—they make space for your answers to arise. You don’t need to chase the next download or outsource your knowing.
You get quiet enough to hear what was always there. Intuition doesn’t scream. It whispers—and oils help you quiet the static so the whisper can be heard.

It comes from becoming available to receive it. You begin to feel your way forward. You stop outsourcing your power. You live in deeper alignment with your own inner compass.

💡 Your body is the bridge—and your intuition is the map.
5. Activating Fulfillment & Purpose (Bliss Layer)
After the body has stabilized,
The breath has deepened,
The emotions have softened,
And your intuition has come online…
You begin to feel it:
That quiet, clear urge to live differently.
To speak more honestly.
To create what only you can create.
To lead from alignment instead of expectation.
This is the bliss body—not the layer of constant happiness, but of true resonance.
It’s when your inner world is so coherent that your outer world naturally begins to rearrange around it.
Purpose isn’t something you have to go find.
It emerges when all the layers of you are in conversation—body, heart, mind, soul.
In this stage, you begin to embody the truth that:
You are allowed to shine.
You are allowed to choose ease.
You are allowed to build a life that fits your soul, not just your schedule.
Essential oils support this level of activation by:
Energizing your field
Strengthening your confidence
Helping you stay grounded as you expand
They become allies in the expression of your purpose—not just the remembering of it.

Jasmine – for visibility, feminine radiance, and self-trust
Cypress – for momentum and releasing stagnation
Spearmint – for clear communication and authentic expression
Magnolia – for grace and self-worth
Rose – for divine embodiment, unconditional self-love, and higher resonance
Motivate – for aligned action and clarity of direction
Purpose isn’t always loud. Sometimes it starts as a quiet choice: To stop performing. To stop waiting. To live in integrity with who you’ve become. This is the turning point when you stop healing as a project and something “to do” and start living as the expression of your healing.
